Our treasure box

Our treasure box

I sat down with a marketing guru and after dumping my brain on the table and using the disclaimer that it was in no order whatsoever, she looked up from the table calmly and smiled. Actually… it wasn’t like that at all. It was a look I had seen before suggesting she had just ‘slapped me slowly, but with a hug’ and her message was clear and firm and so obvious. “I can’t help market YOU if you are not crystal clear on what you are trying to tell people and who you are trying to tell.”

I have realised over the years that trying to identify what is really important in your life can be incredibly challenging and sometimes takes time to gain clarity. This is partly because it can change depending on where we are at in that moment. It can however also be a lot of fun, providing you are in the right head space for a challenge and some tough questions.

What is important in our life is what we ‘decide’ is important and we make these choices every day. These decisions ultimately create who we are. Similarly, what we believe is what we ‘choose’ to believe, and this is something we also have the ability to change. I don’t believe that ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.’ The dog just has to want to learn to do new tricks.

I posted recently ‘is what you are currently doing bringing you closer to where you want to be?’ (how you want your life to look) and this is my mantra these days, but like any goal, we first need to be clear on our Why and then be deliberate about our actions. It is so easy to let a day go by and wonder what we did with hours that have just passed. It is just as easy to lose a day focusing or worrying about the things we cannot control, rather than concentrating on the things we can.

We can quickly be distracted by shiny objects and drama filled lives and lose focus of where we are trying to go. And it is too easy to lose confidence and belief in our ability that we already have everything we need inside us to create and have an amazing life and that there are just some things we will need to learn and figure out along the way.

There once was a beggar who sat on a box by the side of the road for many years. Day in and day out, thousands of strangers would pass him on their way and the beggar did what all beggars do and asked for money.

One day a traveller was passing through town and the beggar shouted, “Please give me some money!” The traveller said, “I’m sorry, I don’t have any money, but I am curious about your box.” “What about my box?” the beggar replied. “Well, what’s in it?”

The beggar responded, “I don’t know, it’s just an old box I found that I’ve been sitting on for years.”

Persistent, the traveller asked again what was in the box. The beggar replied, “I’ve never looked.” “Why not?” asked the traveller. “Because there is nothing there!” the beggar snapped back. The traveller asked, “Are you sure?”

Finally, to appease the traveller’s insistence, the beggar opened the box and looked inside. To his amazement he was faced with a mountain of gold. He’d be sitting on the treasure for years and never even knew it.

What treasure are you sitting on? And what’s it going to take to open it?

Much Love
